‘It’s Intentional’ — Microsoft Windows 11 Reboots Multiple Times After New Security Update (Maria)
The author writes, “Windows security updates are essential to protect your device and data from attacks, but they can have unexpected and concerning consequences. When users installing the latest security update faced multiple system reboots instead of one, perhaps it was natural to suspect another broken security update. However, Microsoft has said that it is intentional behavior. Here’s what to know.”
We Are Bombarding America’s Forests With Roundup (Dana)
From Mother Jones: “Unbeknownst to most people, logging companies and the US Forest Service have been spraying massive amounts of herbicide in clear-cut and fire-ravaged forests of California — and throughout the nation. And not just any herbicide, but glyphosate, a potent and problematic weed killer best known by the brand name Roundup. This once-idyllic landscape, spanning tens of thousands of acres, is among California’s most heavily sprayed forest areas. The Pacific Crest Trail — a hiking route immortalized in the Hollywood movie Wild, starring Reese Witherspoon — runs straight through it. Yet thanks to all the chemicals, it remains a moonscape even now, nearly five years after the Dixie Fire.”
Politico Boss Reportedly Demands Allegiance to Israel From Editorial Staff (Sean)
From Truthout: “The CEO for the parent company of Politico reportedly told editorial staff at the outlet this week that they should wholly embrace the company’s corporate ‘values,’ which include support Israel, or find work elsewhere, new reporting reveals. Jewish Insider reported on the meeting held this week between Axel Spring CEO Mathias Döpfner and Politico staffers and executives. … The CEO is referring to a set of corporate values, which it calls the ‘Essentials,’ written by German founder Axel Spring in 1967. According to the company’s website, the second of the company’s five values is: ‘We support the right of existence of the State of Israel and oppose all forms of antisemitism.’ Other values include that the company works to ‘uphold the principles of a free market economy.’”
World’s Most Powerful Are Suing Media Outlets Before Stories Are Even Published, Says Editor (Reader Jim)
The author writes, “Powerful figures are increasingly threatening to sue media outlets before they have even published a story, the editor of the Wall Street Journal has said. Emma Tucker, whose title is being sued by Donald Trump over its reporting of his relationship with the late child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, said the act of reporting itself was now under threat from the use of lawfare. She said the tactic of threatening to sue newspapers before they had published a story had become an established PR strategy of the powerful amid greater distrust of the established media. ‘One of the biggest challenges to us now isn’t so much what happens afterwards,’ Tucker told the Truth Tellers journalism summit. ‘It’s what happens before you even publish.’”
Alberta Separatist Group Says It Has Enough Signatures To Trigger Referendum on Leaving Canada (Reader Steve)
From the AP: “Alberta separatists said Monday they have formally submitted almost 302,000 signatures to try to trigger a referendum on the province leaving Canada. The group needed 178,000 signatures to force the province to consider such a vote. The question of separation could go on a provincewide ballot as early as October, as Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has said she would move forward if enough names are gathered and verified. Smith has said she personally does not support the oil-rich province leaving Canada. A ‘yes’ vote would not trigger independence automatically. Negotiations with the federal government would have to take place and Daniel Béland, a political science professor at McGill University in Montreal, said some Indigenous groups who are already using the courts to prevent an independence referendum would use venues including the courts to stop independence from happening.”
The Rise of Eyes Began With Just One (Mili)
The author writes, “Look at just about any vertebrate and you’ll see two eyes looking back at you. Falcons circling overhead have two eyes, just like hammerhead sharks roving through the ocean. Scientists have long puzzled over how the vertebrate eye first evolved. A pair of new studies suggest a strange beginning: Our invertebrate ancestors 560 million years ago were cyclopes, with a single eye at the top of their head, scientists now propose, that only later split in two.”
