‘Point of No Return:’ New Orleans Relocation Must Start Now Due To Sea Level, Study Concludes (Maria)
The author writes, “The relocation of people from New Orleans should start immediately, as the city has reached a ‘point of no return’ that will see it surrounded by the ocean within decades due to the climate crisis, a stark new study has concluded. Sea-level rise and the rampant erosion of wetlands in southern Louisiana will swallow up the New Orleans area within a few generations, the study estimates, and the city may be surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico before the end of the century.”
Losing Friends and Alienating People: Oman Edition (Bethany)
The author writes, “America isn’t just losing the Iran war in a conventional sense, we’re losing it fractally. A fractal looks the same no matter how far you zoom in or out, and so does this war. From every angle and on every level, the Iran War is an unmitigated, world-bending catastrophe, each aspect somehow stupider than the last. Let us zoom in on an obscure little branch of this Mandelbrot Disaster. Let us talk about Oman.”
Media Matters Secures Complete and Total Victory Against Federal Trade Commission (DonkeyHotey)
From Media Matters: “Media Matters has secured a complete and total victory in its case against the Federal Trade Commission (Media Matters v. FTC). In an effort to avoid another damaging decision from a federal court of appeals, the FTC sought to withdraw its appeal of the preliminary injunction awarded to Media Matters to halt the FTC’s retaliatory actions. Media Matters made clear that it would oppose that gamesmanship. Facing the prospect of a loss from what’s often considered the nation’s second highest court, the FTC ultimately submitted to a legally binding settlement agreement with Media Matters, withdrawing its blatantly retaliatory demands and committing to forgo ever reissuing or issuing a substantially similar Civil Investigative Demand to Media Matters.”
How Eric Trump Got Rich From Bitcoin While Losing Investors a Fortune (Dana)
From Forbes: “The president’s second son pitches his bitcoin company as a money-printing machine. It’s actually an arbitrage vehicle that preys on MAGA-minded investors.”
She Received a $20,000 Basic Income. Two Years Later, She’s Back To Working Multiple Jobs. (Reader Jim)
From Business Insider: “Cepia Harper starts her day at dawn, commuting to her job as a middle school teacher in Atlanta’s morning rush. After lecturing about thesis statements, the 43-year-old grades papers, tidies up her classroom, then clocks into her second shift selling sneakers at Nike from about 6 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The two roles keep Harper financially afloat, especially after her guaranteed basic income program ended two years ago. She was part of Atlanta’s cohort of 650 low-income Black women who received $20,400 cash between 2022 and 2024, no strings attached. While the extra money allowed her to build savings and earn a new teaching certification, paying her monthly bills is still a challenge.”
Camera Shows Sumatra Orangutan Using a Canopy Bridge To Cross a Road in Indonesia (Reader Steve)
The authors write, “A Sumatran orangutan has been filmed for the first time using a human-made canopy bridge to cross a public road on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, conservationists said [last week]. Rapid development has been shrinking the jungle habitat of the critically endangered species, and fatal conflicts with people have been increasing. The fleeting scene, captured by a motion‑sensitive camera, showed a young Sumatran orangutan pause at the forest’s edge, grip a rope with deliberate care and step out into open air. Halfway across, it stopped, casting a glance down at the road below. Moments later, it crossed.”
